To be interested in something usually means that you enjoy doing that activity more
than you enjoy doing other things. Sometimes kids don't understand what an interest
really means. For example, Charles Dickens loved to write and often worked on writing
his novels for up to 10-12 hours each day. Finding a real interest may mean identifying
something that you love that you can do for hours at a time. Think about examples
in the following areas of general interest:

Performing arts: You really like music, dance, pantomime,
or drama and may enjoy performing in front of someone or helping in a back-stage
area to direct, manage the stage, or even do sets.

Writing and Journalism: You really like doing writing,
such as writing non-fiction stories, prose, poetry, and recording news events.

 |
Mathematics: You may enjoy working with numbers, problems,
patterns, and logic (such as using computers, logic puzzles, and word problems).

 |
History: You may have an interest in studying the past,
such as wars, famous historical figures, antiques, old photographs, ice ages, and
oral histories (talking to people about their past experiences).

Fine Arts: You may like color, texture, and creating products,
such as fabric, jewelry or fashion as well as set and costume design and graphic
layouts. You may also be interested in photography and furniture design.

Sciences: You may enjoy activities related to learning
about biology, chemistry, environmental protection or geology and doing something
with this knowledge, like experimenting or conducting a science fair project, or
even collecting specimens like leaves or arrowheads.

Athletics/Sports: You may like physical activity or are
interested in learning about sports figures, diet, nutrition, physical therapy,
or sports medicine.

Photography/Video: You may enjoy the process of producing
images using photographs or making a motion picture, or even a music video.

Social Action: You may show a concern for legal, moral
or philosophical issues (e.g., women's rights, AIDS victims, animal rights, and
environmental issues). You may want to change a law or do something to make the
world a better place.

Business: You may show an interest in making money, organizing
or starting a business or being in a leadership role in dealing with people, such
as being the play director or yearbook editor.
